Washing Machine Tips and Repair by Allkind Appliance Repair Calgary

  • Keep floor clean around the base so as to allow the feet to grip the floor properly and not let the machine move around as easily when on the spin cycle.
  • Keep the washing machine as level as possible, use lock nuts if included on your machine to secure the legs.
  • The majority of top loading washers use self leveling rear legs and do not require adjustments to them.
  • Front loading washers should only use detergent with the ‘HE’ designation. Do not purchase more detergent than what you will use in approximately six months, as the enzymes in the detergent lose their effectiveness. If at all possible it is better to use fabric softener in the dryer rather than the washer as this can lead to the buildup of residue in the washers’ outer tub over time and may lead to musty smells.
  • Cold wash versus warm or hot: Although detergents have greatly improved through the years, the warmer the water the better detergents tend to perform at removing soils from clothing, particularly in the first fill cycle and then cold rinse to follow.
  • On a front load washing machine be sure to keep the door glass and boot seal clean to prevent leakage and mold buildup around the seal. It is also recommended that the door be kept open slightly when not in use to minimize the chance of developing a musty odour or mold problem, provided the controls and lights can be turned off with the door open. There are various cleaning products available through parts suppliers to help with the maintenance and control of residues that can build up inside tubs of top load and particularly front load washers.
  • Inspect the hoses behind the washer on a regular basis in order to monitor their condition and to assure that there are no visible signs of corrosion or leakage.  The majority of washer manufacturers recommend that ‘rubber fill hoses’ be replaced every five years. However, ‘no burst braided fill hoses’ offer some extra protection against failing hoses. When away from your home for extended periods of time it is recommended that water taps are closed and turned off.
